IE 9 will barely be compliant to HTML 5. They're not used to conforming to other people's standards.
corman420Jul 31, 2010
IE9 should be good. Get rid of the bloatware. I hate the way all the browsers are going right now. Everythign should be an add-on for a customizable experience - much like FireFox was back in the day. But now, they are all bloated memory hogging applications. IE9 is supposed to be much slimmer - lets hope it is... Because anyone in the business world knows we use IE. We just do. We always have, and probably always will as long as Microsoft dominates the Enterpise side of things. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

A lot of programs integrate parts of Internet Explorer into them via APIs.
Once the final version of IE9 is released, I'd highly recommend upgrading for added security, even if you never voluntarily the browser.
satirenineJul 31, 2010
I don't know why people are digging this down since it's absolutely true.
I don't know why you'd want to use Windows or IE at all, but if you do, you should definitely use the latest version.

If you don't believe this wise advice, try to remove file permissions to C:\WINDOWS\system32\mshtml.dll. (Windows will not let you rename or delete this file, BTW)
Then try to run some of your software like:
-Nero
-Quickbooks
-.HTA apps
-any .NET app that need to go on the Internet

The work announced in IE 9 means it is still behind the versions of the other applications that were out earlier this year. That, plus being a favorite successful target for hackers makes it an illogical choice for business and home applications. The only people who do not use passwords and any financial/sensitive stuff on a computer are children and some students.
Microsoft needs to welcome other web browsers on its platform. You do not see Apple attacking Mozilla for offering Firefox on its platform. Microsoft attacks Firefox and everyone just laughs. If Microsoft really believes what it says about competing web browsers and its own, then it does not know what is going on.
I would like to see a really good, safe web browser from Microsoft. One with absolutely no support for ActiveX/COM/OLE/etc. or ActiveDesktop. Just a plain, safe, good, standards complaint web browser. Is that so hard to do? If so, Google, Apple, and Mozilla have already done a fairly good job of it and Microsoft should step out of their way. Plus, start removing IE components from Windows apps.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
crunchydeluxeJul 31, 2010
Microsoft needs to welcome other browsers on its platform? Unless we're living on two different planets, I seem to recall that Windows has been a very open platform for browsers. I haven't used IE since 6 was new, and I've been on Windows this whole time. I've been using various versions of Firefox, up until Chrome came out. Hell, I even briefly flirted with Safari (Win version) for a time. I don't see Microsoft attacking ANYONE in the browser space.
Frankly, Windows *is* Microsoft's OS. They have every right to include their own browser with it, so long as they don't make it impossible to use others. Antitrust laws be damned. It's all bulls**t.
/unexpected rant.

"Microsoft needs to welcome other web browsers on its platform. You do not see Apple attacking Mozilla for offering Firefox on its platform. Microsoft attacks Firefox and everyone just laughs. What the hell are you making up s**t for? There was no attack on Mozilla. Why would Microsoft attack any company who offers software on their operating system? Please stop writing before people come along, read this bulls**t and start believing it.
Last I checked anyone was free to create applications for Windows. I'm using Chrome on Windows 7. You know who really needs to welcome developers on their system? Take a wild guess.
cysseroJul 31, 2010
Microsoft do not attack Firefox - or Chrome, Safari and Opera for that matter. They have on several occasions worked with Mozilla to ensure Firefox would work on upcoming versions of Windows (Vista/7).
They do speed comparisons and regularly acknowledge that there are faster browsers than it. They've worked on extensions and plugins for Firefox too - so I have no idea what your ramble is about.
cooltd825Jul 31, 2010
"Plus, start removing IE components from Windows apps."
I can agree with this, though. It gets annoying when I try to do something in a Windows application and it launches IE instead of my default browser.
dig1xAug 18, 2010
"The work announced in IE 9 means it is still behind the versions of the other applications that were out earlier this year. "
No.
IE9 will be first with CSS3 compliance. First with Hardware accelerated GPU. And first with multithreaded ECMA processing (Chakra), putting it at or near the top of current javascript processing times.
You're wrong.
dpcdominoJul 29, 2010

voginJul 29, 2010
"Internet Explorer 9 is a big improvement on Internet Explorer 8".
Guess what? Even if the Firefox remained stuck as it is now, it would be a big improvement on the Internet Explorer 13.
johnilmJul 29, 2010
And people will still complain about IE6.
Closed AccountJul 31, 2010
Maybe that's because web developers have to work to support things that are years older than the latest and greatest?
I would be thrilled if everyone everywhere switched over to IE9 if they used a previous version, but as it stands I have to be happy enough that I can mostly ignore IE6 and focus on making s**t work on IE7.
bjornskiJul 31, 2010
That's because IE6 was a non-compliant, hole-ridden piece of s**t.
dig1xAug 18, 2010

cysseroJul 31, 2010
Microsoft themselves complain about IE6. They want people to stop using it ASAP, and have stated this many times.
cooltd825Jul 31, 2010
They need to keep support for it though, or else all those virus coders will start writing for real browsers like Chrome and FF :D
explodingzebrasAug 1, 2010
IE6 must die, unfortunately idiots like the UK government continue to use it
phillyocJul 29, 2010
I like some of the features of IE like the slices and accelerators, but not enough to make me switch from FF. And as much as this is a non-issue with most of us that already use superior browsers, I like the fact that it may light a fire under other developers asses. Do you know how pissed off the Chrome or Mozilla people would be if this even took a handful of people away?
nextparadigmsJul 29, 2010
They want to make it popular before too many move to Chrome and Chrome OS.

I don't hate netbooks. I was just joking. I do think they are kind of stupid though. I can't imagine doing nothing but casual browsing on a computer.
mattbdJul 31, 2010
@vagrantwade
Actually I have a Dell Mini which dual-boots XP and Ubuntu Netbook Edition, and I've used it for playing Homeworld (admittedly it's quite an old game, but it runs perfectly on it), writing HTML, Python and Perl, and SSH-ing into my shell account with devio.us. The first generation of netbooks you couldn't do much with but my Mini's reasonably powerful and does virtually everything I want.
johnnysoftwareJul 30, 2010
I do not expect to see IE 9 released until 2011 at the earliest, which is when Microsoft's first/optimistic guess was. I would not be surprised if it did not ship until 2012 or early 2013.
This is just a beta. You can get nightly builds of Firefox and Safari WebKit anytime year round. Hopefully, Microsoft shops will test with the beta whenever it becomes available. One would hope they are testing with Firefox and Safari too. They are a better gauge for the way IE will work in a couple of years than IE itself is.
The reason is simple. Apple, Mozilla, and Google race to implement the web standards. Microsoft drags its feet for eons, and then acts like it is doing everyone a favor when it fixes major omissions and design flaws in IE of those same standards.
dig1xAug 18, 2010
> I do not expect to see IE 9 released until 2011 at the earliest
They're releasing the beta next month. Who cares when it's "officially released". They'll have a few milestones and updates, then the release.

What they need to do now is create a whole new web browser. In reality, all they would do is rename Internet Explorer into something new and catchy. But if they were halfway intelligent, they'd just start from the ground up and toss IE into the rubbish bin. Even if they made IE the best web browser around, a good chunk of the population (nerds) would still refuse to use it.

IE is dead. Long live Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera, etc.(real browsers).
darkshroudJul 31, 2010
Yeah that's why IE still has more market share than all of those browsers combined.
cooltd825Jul 31, 2010
It's because Americans are stupid and won't change to something that's looking them right in the face.
Look at Germany and Russia's browser usage.
zephikAug 1, 2010
It's true. I've installed onto my relatives computers multiple browsers and have even hidden or erased IE and they still end up using IE one way or the other.
Once you get used to something, you end up not wanting to change. Mobile Safari for example, is the worst goddamn f**king web browser ever, and there are a few decent ones in the App Store, but I always end up staying with Mobile Safari because I initially spent like a year using it before I ever thought to look for different/better web browsers.
(it doesnt really suck that much, there's just a few absolutely retarded things about it.)
dig1xAug 18, 2010
IE8 has seen two month-over-month increases of marketshare. FF and Chrome have both have decreases.
IE9 will be first with Hardware 3D. First with multi-threaded Javascript. First with CSS3.
You're fooling yourself if you think that IE is "dead".
IE9 is going to blow the doors of other browsers -- watch.

darkshroudJul 31, 2010
It's supposed to be, with each preview version released (I think we're on the 4th) MS has added CSS3 & HTML5 support. The only thing really holding MS back on that is that fact that HTML5 & CSS3 are not finalized.
MS has also done a lot of work on SVG.
therealmisterdAug 3, 2010

gamingforeverJul 31, 2010
I said this on digg when IE 8 was announced and coming out.. IE will always suck no matter what they do with it!
darkshroudJul 31, 2010
You guys all talk trash considering IE9 is pushing multi-core support in new ways and has taken hardware acceleration to impressive new levels. On top of that they used open APIs so that Firefox was able to look at what MS did and add the GPU hardware acceleration to their Alphas. Meanwhile Webkit has no hardware acceleration and it will be a bitch for them because of the splintering.
cooltd825Jul 31, 2010
and yet WebKit is faster than Firefox AND Internet Explorer....
darkshroudAug 1, 2010
And right now Opera is faster than Webkit so what's your point. We have reached a place where browser java script speed is now moot when we measure in .xxx seconds to declare a winner.
It also won't matter who is fastest at script rendering when the whole of the page loads faster with hardware acceleration. IE9 will run the java script engine on a separate core than the rest of the browser. Not to mention SVG & Canvas getting hardware acceleration support between multiple cores, threads, & the GPU.

jefftsJul 31, 2010
Great, another version of IE that clients will expect web developers to support.
mattbdJul 31, 2010
Well, expecting developers to support IE6 through 9 would be utterly insane and entirely unreasonable. My own thoughts are that developers should reasonably be expected to fully support the current and preceding version of IE, so right now that would be IE7 and IE8. Anyone wanting full IE6 support should pay a surcharge.
jefftsJul 31, 2010
Yes, very true. I have several clients whom I subcontract from. Some of their clients, which are corporate clients, still run IE 6 on their networks. Some began demanding support for IE 8 this Spring so I informed them that if they wanted 8, 6 would no longer be supported. Given what these clients pay me, I was at their mercy in terms of what to support. I had been looking for a way to drop support for IE 6 completely so their demands provided the perfect excuse for all clients.

zb757Jul 31, 2010
Compatibility mode is one of the stupidest things MS has done. Just declare the old implementation deprecated and move on
mattbdJul 31, 2010
That's just stupid. If Google don't bother supporting IE6 anymore, why do you have to?
darkshroudAug 1, 2010
Because Google doesn't pay web developer's bills nor do they pay companies to update their software.
mattbdAug 1, 2010
Yeah, but it sets a precedent. Web developers can point to Google and other major web companies and say "Google, with all their resources, have decided they can no longer afford to support IE6. Why do you think you need to support it?", thus putting the onus on them to justify why they need IE6 support. And if they do, developers should charge extra.

IE has increased marketshare the last two months. FF has decreased.
FF4 isnt going to do much frankly. FF and Chrome are competing for the "We hate evil M$ors!11!" market, the rest of us non-dogmatic computer users dont care.
IE9 will have GPU rendering: First. CSS3 first. Multi-threaded Javascript: First. You're fooling yourself if you think that IE9 *isnt* going to be a big deal. It's going to be a big fckuing deal, and a lot of the usual "IE suxors" loudmouths are going to be eating their words.
The purpose of the BETA is for just that. To get -- those who are intersted to look -- a chance to see it and compare. People who actually download and use it are going to have a *real* opinion, one based on fact, not the usual anti-MS tripe.
I'm taking bets: IE9 is going to be a fantastic browser, and it's going to get terrific respect, uptake and reviews. Mark my words.
