cnn.com — Russian computers that control the international space station's orientation and supply of oxygen and water have failed, potentially extending the space shuttle's mission -- or cutting it short. Russian engineers aren't sure why the computers stopped working. A failure of this type has never occurred before on the space station.

Yes it's windows, they wanted a Mac but like most of us NASA thought they were overpriced.BTW: I read a long time ago that during the Apollo-Soyuz missions, the Americans were surprised to see that instead of having expensive seats with restrains to keep you down, the Russians had bolted down stools in front of some working stations. Cosmonauts would just wrap their legs around the rungs to keep from floating off. Never was able to confirm, but it sure would illustrate Russian no- frill common sense approach.

>> Yes it's windows, they wanted a Mac BS. There's not a lot of Photoshopping being done on the space station.>> Russians had bolted down stools in front of some working stations. Apollo-Soyuz consisted of an Apollo CM with it's crew couches, a Soyuz with it's crew couches, and a narrow docking adapter brought by the Apollo. There was no room for stools.

What ELSE can go wrong on this mission? Dudes, I think space exploration is cool and like totally worth the US $,$$$,$$$,$$$,$$$.00 (cash) spent and we should keep spending money, lots and lots of it. But look, ISS -- the International Space Station -- is...it's...well...isn't it time to seriously consider placing it into retirement, like maybe this year? No more upgrades. No more troubleshooting. Why not use the large amount of knowledge gained to develop ISS Jr.?My heart is not thrilled and is not resonating with pleasant musical harmonies over the current situation with our Space Shuttle Atlantis (STS-117)...I am very worried. Can Atlantis carry its current crew plus the ISS crew? If so, then bring them ALL home...and by home I mean Atlantis' wheels and boots and feet on Planet Earth's terra firma!Big Photo: Atlantis looking beautiful as she heads off on a hot date (September 8, 2000, STS-106):http://chamorrobible.org/images/photos/gpw-20040817k-processed-STS-106-NASA-KSC-00PP-1416.jpg (all the details at http://chamorrobible.org/gpw/gpw-20040817.htm , look for pic #11)P.S. And no, we cannot retire the shuttle fleet right now because we don't have a replacement!
