blog.arun-prabha.com — I have successfully installed Virtualbox in my Ubuntu Feisty Fawn desktop. Installation was pretty simple. Configuration and installing Windows took some time. I’m listing the steps I followed to get it installed and configured.

It can't be done. Virtualizers can only run programs within the virtualization, not real OS installs.

It works with vmware workstation - pricey or illegal - <a class="user" href="http://www.vmware.com/support/reference/linux/rawdevices_linux.html">http://www.vmware.com/support/reference/linux/rawdevices_linux.html</a> and you may be able to hack around with virtualbox, although I doubt it'll be very reliable.

It is very possible, while also being free using VMPlayer. I was able to follow these instructions:<a class="user" href="http://oopsilon.com/Running-a-Windows-Partition-in-VMware">http://oopsilon.com/Running-a-Windows-Partition-in-VMware</a>But since I have a laptop with an SATA drive, the numbers I got from parted didn't seem to work. To work around this, I was able to download VMWare Server (also free) and configure a vmdk file for my hard drive that works really well. I've been trying to get a VT-enabled VM working with my existing partition (Xen or Qemu), but have had no luck. You can see my problems I encountered here:<a class="user" href="http://qemu-forum.ipi.fi/viewtopic.php?p=11022">http://qemu-forum.ipi.fi/viewtopic.php?p=11022</a>that no one responded to, even with suggestions on how I can progress.

I'm not saying tutorials aren't neccessary sometimes, but this guy is doing a screen for screen recap of the installer, then adding captions which are less informative than the instructions within the installer. I mean look at the actual screenshots and his captions. One of the steps has a caption "Enter a name for the virtual machine. I gave WinXP to show it’s Windows XP installation. Select the OS type you want to install. It’s Windows XP in my case. Click Next.". If you look at the pic of the actual installer this is the text it gives you "Enter a name for the new virtual machine and select the guest operating system you plan to install in the machine". The rest of the tutorial is no less redundant.

Ubuntu is probably THE best software I've ever put on my computer. It's made me totally virus and trojan proof, and it plays WoW which is enough for me. Plus now I can still use MS Office running on this software windows program if I need. Niiice !!

Some people need windows to compile windows apps or simply don't have alternatives. I almost took a statistics class where they required me to run a specific windows app. I dropped it promptly, but had I been able to spend 100 dollars in books and software at the time, I would have either booted into windows or kept windows where it belongs... inside a window running linux.

Wine generally takes care of all my gaming needs, so Linux still wins.
