kungfuice.com — OK finally Adobe has decided to release Flash Player 9 in Beta Form for Linux. I?ve decided to throw together a quick how to on how to install it on Ubuntu Edgy. This should hold true however for most flavours of Ubuntu, and most Debian based Distros.

Both guides are missing an important point: those files are symlinks to a default flash library. That means that other software (Thunderbird, the Mozilla suite, Liferea, and any other program using FF's rendering engine) will still use Flash 7 when they need to render a Flash movie. If you alredy have Flash 7 and want Flash 9 installed system-wise, do this to copy the file:sudo cp libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so

I agree. Not only will these HOWTOs confuse new users, but will also deter new ones from trying linux.Basically, you unzip the file into /usr/lib/firefox/plugins.

I got it working on Ubuntu Breezy with this (should work with Dapper and Edgy):1) remove Flash 7 via Synaptic (this is why simply copying to the directories isn't working for some people)2) put the Flash 9 libflashplayer.so in your home directory.3) From terminal cut n' paste these two commandscp libflashplayer.so ~/.mozilla/pluginssudo cp libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/4) restart Firefox. Should now work.To confirm type about:plugins in the url bar and it should now say Flash 9.To test see a couple of test sites, above.Works like a charm!! Thank you Adobe and the Flash Dev team!!! Nicely done!!!

It should go it /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree where firefox and other programs (mozilla for instance) are already linked to it.

I created a video showing newbies how to do this. You can watch it here (ironically using flash :) ) http://quickones.org/Installing_Flash_on_Ubuntu_i386For the irony-impaired you can stream and download mpeg2, mp4 and ogg/theora videos from there too.
