expertsrt.com — He shows you how to install Apache and PHP on Windows XP, as well as how to set up a nice working environment. As a bonus, he also shows you how to install MySQL if you're interested. You can have a complete working server environment on your desktop and be able to do all your test there.

wampserver is using the old 1.x Apache tree, not the current 2.x tree so XAMPP is a better alternative.

PHP and MySQL... two packages that have pretty shady liscenses that shouldnt be trusted. While I'm not a Free Software, RMS worshiping zealot, I do think its better to use Free Software when there are alternatives with less ominous liscenses that are up to par or better than the software in question: perl, python and postgres (all round better software too!)

r2d7 makes some valid points. And you have to see it to believe it.Too many companies are naive when it comes to hiring IT staff and programmers and they tend to end up with these "I read a few tutorials on the internet and now I'm a software engineer" people. But they don't know any better. All they see are the acronyms and buzzwords on the resume and they get excited. In the end, they've got software that, well, kind of works, but as the company grows they're screwed because their "programmer" unforunately has never heard of scalability. No guide/tutorial can ever replace what a good textbook and solid university training can do.

Thanks for posting this. I just tried this by downloading Apache 2.2 and had problems. I know you must use this version and I'm going to start again. I will not give up. It is my first time and these instruction along with screen shots look excellent. Thanks again.

A pre-built version came out which includes RubyonRails a couple of months ago. Why do the work when somebody already has.<a class="user" href="http://wiki.rubyonrails.org/rails/pages/InstantRails">http://wiki.rubyonrails.org/rails/pages/InstantRails</a>

I've installed APM like a million times, but for whatever reason things just weren't going well between PHP and MySQL. After 2 days of Apache/PHP/MySQL headaches, countless online guides and gallons of coffee. I stumbled upon this. Taking a moment from the rage to compose myself, I followed this through and had everything up and running with about 10 mins :PDefinately recommend this to anyone. And yes, my c**k is bigger because I run the whole lot seperately under XP ;)

This website is dead. I couldn't find a full article for a basic setup without going the packaged route so I posted an article - see it here.<a class="user" href="http://digg.com/programming/Howto_Setup_PHP_Apache_Mysql_on_Windows">http://digg.com/programming/Howto_Setup_PHP_Apache ...</a>Good Luck
