wiki.ubuntu.com — Want to take Linux for a spin? Forget partitions, dual-boot setups and live CDs: The new Ubuntu Windows installer lets you run the Linux distro while keeping the rest of your system intact. In other words, it's like a live CD without the CD. What cryptic error message was it? Where did it stop booting? How much further did it get on boot?If Ubuntu didn't work for you why not try another distro? There is Fedora, SuSe, CentOS, Debian, and Gentoo to start with. If you'd like to see more check distrowathc.org

So what should people be obsessed with? It still uses the Linux kernel you know...

Try installing the appropriate drivers for your graphics card. The "Easy Ubuntu" software will make this task much easier. Use Google to find it.

In a terminal, type "sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf" - without the quotes obviously.Scroll down until you find the "screen" section. Once there you'll see a modes section listing available screen resolutions. Add the ones you need/want, and save the file. Then hit CTRL + ALT + Backspace to restart GDM, login, then go back and look to see if the new resolutions are there for you to choose, if it doesn't already select the highest available supported res on login, which it normally does.If that fails, you could also try reconfiguring x-server with this command "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg".HTH.

ive recently tried ubuntu, and it completly killed my laptop, i used the live cd and everything worked good, so i thought id try installing it. big mistake, the install took quite a while, crashed twice. once it finaly installed it worked once then when i restarted to load up xp because i could not get ubuntu to connect via my router i found that xp would not load it would get so far then some weird error i have never seen befor popped up and every thing froze. so turned of lap top and tried again same thing. so restarted and tried to load ubuntu and it to crahed every time it loaded. i had never had any problem like this on my laptop befor. not ever a blue screen of death when i was just running xp. only just got everything back working again, and only by using the hard drive recovery software at the computer store i work at. i always hear good things about ubuntu my first exeriance with it was a night mare i think ill stick with xp on my laptop for now, and vista ultimate on my desktop.
