arstechnica.com — Ars has added their commentary to an Indiana state senator's attempt to push legislation that would keep children from buying violent video games. What's hilarious is that this same law has pretty much failed in every other state it's been proposed in. What's even funnier? Indiana already tried to pass similar laws in 2000 and it failed then.

linkdead:It's not about getting inappropriate material into the hands of children. Any reasonable person knows that's wrong. The problem with obscenity laws targeting minors is that they're one step away from obscenity laws targeting everyone. Rather than deal with the legal requirements, retailers will just not stock those games (or movies, music, etc) to avoid the potential liability. Then nobody (including 21+ people like me) will be able to buy the games. It's the "if you don't like it, just turn it off" philosophy.Parents: if you don't want your kids playing inappropriate games, don't buy them. It's not like many under-17's have their own jobs, right?

It does seem to be a "get on the bandwagon" type of response. The senator knows it will be shot down, but in the end it will look good on his record, even though it will waste taxpayers time and dollars. I live in Indiana (just moved here) and like it. Its peaceful and quiet where I am at, and just a short drive to Chicago if I need to go to the big city.

"So because being a parent is hard, you want us to all do it (and make sacrifices) for you? Screw that. Be a parent or jump ship and shut the f**k up. I didn't make you forget to wear a condom and squeeze another brat into this world and, in the process, force myself to be further regulated for the sake of the little snotnosed s**t you can't manage to control."You must be gay. Or have a little pecker.

"Great... Just what us gamers need, another crybaby telling us which games to play and not to play..."Play what ever you want...But if your a child under 18 get a life go to school, learn something and get of you fat ass and go out side and play.

According to the Senator's own publications, he's for denying homosexuals their constitutional rights. So, big surprise that he'd be on the stupid side of video game legislation.

Stupid law parent who dont pay attention to the rating will end up going to the local best-buy and getting the game for their kids anyway. Why try to blame the retailer for what kids are buying.......it not like a game is cheap new games range in price from $19.99 to 49.99+ so for a kid to afford a game(most of the time) they have to get the money from their parents. So if the goverenment was really interested in stopping kids from playing voilent games then they should invest some money into educating parent on using the rating on games, it's sad that game developers put more affect into this and then get their work twist by those in government trying to make a name for themselfs just look as the bill coming before congress http://www.senate.gov/~clinton/news/statements/details.cfm?id=249368It's just a easy was to make a name on a issue but really do you think they care. Hell kids could turn on the TV (local not cable) adn see all the violent and sex they want.
