I have not read the original study, but most likely they used a shuttle box which is a rectangle with a wall and door separating it into two sections. When the rat is in one section, it received light pulses that probably activated the dopamine reward pathway, and when it was in the other section, it did not receive light. Therefore, if you came back the next day, the rat would spend more time on the side of the box where it received the light pulses the day before. You can do the same thing by giving them food on only one side. There is nothing inherently sleazy or unethical, they just used the term "pleasure room" for a lay audience.

Ya, most of them are just joking.No technology is inherently evil, like anything it can be used for either good or evil. I know for someone who buys into the bulls**t that is original sin this can be hard to believe, but there is no world wide conspiracy to control the very minds of the masses. Frankly, I see a collapse into anarchy as being far more likely than the matrix. What you see here is just an attempt to gain knowledge. These scientists did not set out to create a doomsday technology, nor will it ever be used as such.
