boston.com — The Sun is now in the quietest phase of its 11-year activity cycle, the solar minumum - in fact, it has been unusually quiet this year - with over 200 days so far with no observed sunspots. The solar wind has also dropped to its lowest levels in 50 years. Seen below are some recent images of the Sun in more active times.

Love those videos, you can't really comprehend the scale even with numbers and pictures.

Those are amazing, #9 is awesome, the one where they show the sun moving. Great, great shots.

Digg is so full of sensational and exaggerated titles that 'Incredible Images of the Sun' seemed like another shameful attempt at attention whoredom, but I am glad to say I was wrong.. these pictures are truly incredible, and the animation of the Sun in particular is my favorite. We live in an extraordinary and beautiful universe, but sometimes we become blind to the awe of space by getting too involved in small time bickering and politics. Everyone should take a break and just stare into the sky once in a while.Peace.

How are you going to explore anything, let alone just land on the sun, when its all dark out? Who is the fool now!
