Everyone mentions the absence of clouds, but am I the only one to notice the absence of ice? The North West Passage and above should be a solid block. The Hudson Bay all the way down to Churchill Manitoba should be a big ice flow. The St-Lawrence seaway should be jammed.
While this may not be a FAKE, It is not a photo or a photo mosaic. It is a 3d rendered picture of interpreted data.Even combining IR and Telephoto lens shots would not get you this good, or complete, a picture. There are many places in the world, including in the US, that even NASA cannot take photo recon shots of. On top of that you would see city structure even from way up there, at least all the astronauts comment about it. :P
I think this should be modified to say Space in Winter '04 (relative to N. Hemisphere). Think about the relationship of looking at the planet, and saying "Winter".

where is all the civilization? major cities shouldn't be brown or green, they should be gray or white.

Theres no clouds or darkness because they take these pictures at different times during ideal conditions. Thought that was pretty obvious.
