forbes.com — Scranton, Pa. -- Scranton and Wilkes-Barre are no longer thriving coal towns, and the region has struggled to build a post-industrial economy. Some help has come from the unlikeliest of sources: NBC comedy The Office which gave the city an excuse to start an "Office" convention.

That's very weird. As a Canadian who lives in Toronto and going to Cleveland for 2 days while my girlfriend was at a vascular training conference there, we couldn't get over how DEAD the city was. It was very beautiful downtown by the stadium there, but no one was out and about!

Don't get me wrong. I wasn't knocking down Cincinnati in particular. I've got more issues with Columbus, but noone asked for those.Columbus' downtown seems to be on the rise actually. Personally, I don't think it'll last and all those condos are going to go to waste. But they say it's working. Is Cincinnati's downtown better? I lived downtown on Greenwich for a year in 2002... most boring year of my life, nightlife environment wise. Sure... Main St. or whatever... But I was nowhere near in college nor had a desire to troll for chicks who were. Spent most evenings in Clifton, which could have saved me thousands if I hadn't hoped SOOO much that living downtown was cool.
