That’s like writing a note to remember where you put the note that told you where you placed the note that that told you where you located the note that reminded you to do something. I love post its
Two great quotes on the subject: "Knowledge isn't everything, but it's damn close. "& "It's only when you think you understand that your hopelessly confused"
It's really quite simple. A person remembers that which they attend to. Paying attention. But a person is not likely to pay attention to some passing trivia. Now, people don't want to admit it, but many casual introductions are just noise and the people introduced are quite unimportant and useless. Of course they are naturally forgotten. On the other hand, if you meet an interesting person, even if you want to forget, you may not be able to.Instead of hacking the mind to remember all kinds of trash, why not just let go and simplify? Just remember your own name, and that's good enough. If you have a steady friend, you'll remember without much practice. If a thing doesn't fit into a hole, with some effort you may squeeze it. But you should pay attention to how, perhaps, it doesn't fit there for a very good reason, and maybe you shouldn't try to squeeze it.Maybe instead of being embarassed by not remembering a person's name, why not just be at ease asking it again and again, as needed? If the other person has no patience with this, then it's as much their own problem as it is yours. If someone gets indignant when their name is forgotten, well that's just because their ego is overfat. Down to earth people don't care what you call them and don't mind repeating their name.If you want to, you'll remember it. It's really that simple.

I'd really like it if they told me how to actually improve my memory rather than tell me how to memorize certain things.

I believe there is only one way to improve your memory - School of Phenomenal Memory.

There are 9 ways to improve memory listed at www.whatsyournameagain.com. Believe it or not, exercise is one of them.
