It's a good point. A hundred years ago, even at places like Harvard, conservatives didn't want to try and improve the Medical school or education generally and preferred to keep the status quo. Progressives made that quality improvement. Now, unfortunately, it is the other way around and progressives want to keep a status quo that often doesn't work very well. Hopefully one day the progressives can be progressives again.
I agree with you that too many progressives have become conservative, in the sense of wanting to maintain the status quo in certain regards. However, I do believe that the majority of Americans still hold the values of classical liberalism, even if they vehemently deny the liberal label. What is incredibly sad is how many people take advantage of the advances made possible by liberals - freedom of speech, religion, enterprise, etc. - to use those same advantages to attack liberals as the enemy. Regretably, the situation has become so dire that modern scribes and many "conservatives" feel perfectly free in talking of eliminating liberals/progressives as if they were vermin. All this from people claiming to be conserving traditional American values.
