ecoiron.blogspot.com — As noted, an all white web page uses about 74 watts to display, while an all black page uses only 59 watts. I thought I would do a little math and see what could be saved by moving a high volume site to the black format.

I think perhaps there are more sensible power-saving measures available like switching off lights one is not using, not leaving electronic equipment on stand-by, relying more on suitable clothing and less on aircon and heating, etc.-- Adam

I like how he converts work into energy and then back into work. "Megawatt-hours per year"

While this might be true for CRTs, it's not true for LCD monitors. The reason why is because the LCD has a back light that is on whenever the monitor is active (not on standby). The liquid crystals generate color or blackness by filtering or absorbing that light. Since LCD monitors are becoming more popular, using a black website to save energy is pointless. If you want to save energy, set the computer to shut down the screen.

If you are looking for the most effective green to-dos for the most important environmental issues I would recommend the book described below. It is old enough to be in libraries and used book venues....this post isn't about trying to sell the book, just passing on useful information for people who care.I would update the list below with limiting family sizes to 2 kids as every lifestyle comes at an environmental price even if you do everything you can. I would also avoid fish since articles are predicting the Oceans will be dead in a few decades from plastic pollution ( from land based trash ) and over fishing. The Consumers Guide To Effective Environmental Choices:Practical Advice From The Union Of Concerned Scientistsby Michael Brower, PH.D. and Warren Leon, PH.D.ISBN:0-609-80281-X( from the back cover )“Paper or plastic? Bus or car? Old house or new? Cloth diapers or disposables? Some choices have a huge impact on the environment; others are of negligible importance. To those of us who care about our quality of life and what is happening to the earth, this is a vastly important issue. In these pages, the Union of Concerned Scientists help inform consumers about everyday decisions that significantly affect the environment. For example, a few major decisions such as the choice of a house or vehicle have such a disproportionately large affect on the environment that minor environmental infractions shrink by comparison. This book identifies the 4 Most Significant Consumer Related Environmental Problems, 7 Most Damaging Categories, 11 Priority Actions, and 7 Rules for Responsible Consumption”. Learn what you can do to have a truly significant impact on our world”( from page 85 )PRIORITY ACTIONS FOR AMERICAN CONSUMERS:Transportation:1. Choose a place to live that reduces the need to drive.2. Think twice before purchasing another car.3. Choose a fuel efficient, low polluting car.4. Set concrete goals for reducing your travel.5. Whenever practical, walk, bicycle, or take public transportationFood:6. Eat less meat.7. Buy certified organic produce.Household Operations:8. Choose your home carefully.9. Reduce the environmental costs of heating and hot water.10. Install efficient lighting and appliances.11. Choose an electricity supplier offering renewable energy.

I prefer http://www.keepglobe.com over Blackle. They donate 50% of revenue to a green cause and it is hosted on a server that is powered by wind and sun energy. They also have an image search. Black search engines do not save energy as they claim and also my eyes twitch after seeing that black background.
