abcnews.go.com— Iceland wants to make a full conversion and plans to modify its cars, buses and trucks to run on renewable energy ? with no dependence on oil.

Iceland has a population of 290,000 and and 103,000 square km its Smalll compared to larger industrial countries. Alternative vehicles are great at short distances not so good if you have to travel long distances. And the cost is alot less to fit gas stations with alternative fuels in iceland that lets say the uk or usa, where the land mass is larger.
I look forward to the day when I can slap a rechargable hydrogen cartridge into my motorcycle and head down the road...and I'm a dyed in the wool capitalist. Personally, I want to switch to renewable sources because 1) it's better for the environment and 2) to gut the Middle East's cashflow. Less cashflow to tyrannical ME governments means less money finding its way into terrorist pockets. It's a smart move all the way around.+Dugg
If only more countries would consider having a volcano* large enough to support the whole population through turbines and geothermal energy*they use the sea too. technically they use tides, which from my limited knowledge has something to do with the moon.In all seriousness though, Iceland is a great for doing this, and giving me the sweet sweet Emiliana Torrini, Bjork, and a s**t load of people with names ending in sson, which I'm sure are great too.
To answer the poster who insists that water vapor is a greenhouse gas, and by definition, contributing to global warming, you are confusing the difference between accumulating greenhouse gases and those in equilibrium. Water vapor can't get much higher, else it turns to rain, whereas carbon dioxide has been on a dramatic rise since the industrialization of the world [<a class="user" href="http://www.john-daly.com/bull120.htm]">http://www.john-daly.com/bull120.htm]</a>
Oh come on, we all know that global warming is fake.... It is an elaborate scheme made up by the Democrats to keep us buying foreign cars that are more fuel efficient in order to put Americans out of work which in turn will lead those Americans to blame the Bush administration....Obviously we all know that... jeesh!/end rant
two thumbs up !! go Icelandoh and you can't compare America to Iceland however it's a shame that the USA is not working on alternative resources yet it's doing a great job on steeling oil as much as it can from those helpful weak countries.
Hmmm....you seem to have fundamentally misunderstood everything here, which is odd since you seem to understand simple chemistry. Producing hydrogen from petrochemicals would be very silly indeed. You'd simply be wasting energy and be producing pollutants converting one form of fuel to another. That's pointless. Using geothermal energy to split water is a good idea because, in effect, the efficiency doesn't matter since nothing is actually being consumed that wasn't being consumed naturally (ignoring basic overheads). Fuel cells reverse the process to produce energy with the clever use of advanced catalysts.

Definately moving to Iceland when the peak hits. Too bad they will probably get swamped when it does. Serves them right for being forward thinking.

Iceland could try some plug in... I heard on a few years now Mitsubishi truck parts - <a class="user" href="http://www.aftermarketperformanceparts.com/mitsubishi-truck-parts.html">http://www.aftermarketperformanceparts.com/mitsubishi-truck-parts.html</a> would be powered by electricity...

A noble idea! I wish the best to the people of Iceland and to their government who have made such a conscious decision. Kudos! But is it practical?<a class="user" href="http://www.oilbeat.com">http://www.oilbeat.com</a>
