Everyone should have the right to vote, I fail to see how anyone could think otherwise. Democracy fails if you don't give everyone the chance. Some people don't deserve the vote of course, but that's a different matter altogether.Of course women have the right to vote, and deserve the vote too. They live in our (men and women's) society, I'd be interested to hear what makes her say what she does.
If an employer is paying for "Maternity Leave", then I don't have a problem with the benefits if the woman comes back to the job after the leave, but if she doesn't come back then I feel that she must reimburse the company. A company has to pay the woman while she is gone, hold the job open for the woman, other people has to do her work while she is gone, so if she is leading-on the company that she is going to return it prevents the coming from moving forward to find a replacement, thus the company and employees are penalized while the woman is taking advantage of the situation.
I agree with part of your comment. most women ARE doing things backwards, but it is because of our culture. They get their careers FIRST, then try to have a family, then screw up their careers. I am still young, have one child, plan on being done with my baby making before I'm 30. I am working part time, and getting ready for grad school, hubby has a decent job. i figure by the time i am ready to get a really good, professional job in my field will be when my last kid is in kindergarten and all of the other women will be just leaving to have their first kids. i realize this isn't ideal for everyone, but to me it makes the most sense. i won't ever have to leave a good job and try to re-enter the work force.
I have given birth, and I still think 4 months is WAY to long. In fact I think a week is stretching it. I've heard of post-partum depression. I've also heard of plain old depression, which many people manage to deal with and work. In fact there are many, many people who deal with mental and physical issues more taxing than being pregnant, yet they still manage to work. Many places do offer free or discounted daycare for employees. The people who can't afford to stay home with their kids or pay for daycare SHOULDN'T BE HAVING CHILDREN THEY CAN'T AFFORD.Society does not owe women anything just because they're having/have had a kid. You're still going to have to work just as much if you want the same pay, I'm sorry to break it to you. Look, you can't have it both ways; either women are the same as men and should be considered equally when applying for jobs, OR women are better suited to taking care of children and therefore it should be considered more likely that they are going to quit their jobs to have children.
I'm not sure which is more depressing; The numerous anti-woman comments on here or the fact that I'm not surprised by them. There seems to be A LOT of assumptions based on misinformation or one time experiences.Perhaps some of you have dealt with women who got pregnant, took maternity leave and never returned. How is this different from any other employee who stops showing up one day or calls in sick on Monday because they had a few too many? Childless men and women are guilty of this behavior as well.We have a lot of moms in the office that I work in. 6 weeks is the norm, they do NOT get paid for this time off and almost all of them have returned. One woman recently gave birth and she did not slack off during her pregnancy at all. She will be returning because staying at home, as other mothers have told me, is extremely boring and unsatisfying. When a woman is pregnant, a company has plenty of time to make plans or find a replacement. When this is done, the transition will run more smoothly. But if a company insists on waiting 'til the last minute, it's obviously going to cause problems. This is the responsibility of the company and not the fault of the woman. The B.S that woman should stay home when they give birth is very out of date. Women are not working because they want extra spending money or because it gets them out of the house. They are working because THEY HAVE TO. Few families can afford to live on one paycheck.I see a lot of comments telling couples not to have children until you are financially and mentally prepared for it. For the most part I agree with this. My husband and I are not ready for children right now and it will probably be another several years before we consider the option. (We might adopt or we might stick with cats.)Having said that, who in the world is REALLY financially and mentally prepared for children? You can never be prepared enough. The time will never be right. There will always be a reason to not have children. Having a child changes everything. No one can prepare for that and even if you do, life is unpredictable. You can be laid off, you can experience a disabling illness or injury, your child might have special needs, etc. And while I dislike the idea of parents having more children than they can afford, I also have to recognize the great minds and talents that were raised in poverty or adversity. Sorry for the long rant, but some of the comments on here were extremely pathetic...and I suppose I am a glutton for punishment.
Those mindsets are generally and justifiably ignorant, and that is why they are newsworthy. If I am so "retarded" then why was this on the front page. Obviously, to some population, at least this one, being a sexist bigot is generally considered ignorant behavior, and as far as I can tell, that designation is justifiable via the suffrage movement, the civil rights movement, and the poster hanging up in your breakroom that explains the non-discrimination policy of your current employer.

I am surprised by any of this? No. This administration will have to try harder to shock me.
