I was sick of all the corporate bickering back and forth over iPod vs Zune, so I decided to put my own money down and find out for myself... Sorry if it has to come down to posting my own reviews to digg, but since I don't have the backing of Apple or Microsoft, its hard to get noticed.
In reference to the question on hooking it up to a mac...It does show up in System Profile as a Zune, but does not mount or show up in Disk Utility to mount it. I'm sure its just a driver thing, but as of now, it can't be used as a hard drive on a mac.As for the video, the Zune device itself only plays WMV files, however, I have successfully dropped H.264 and MPEG 4 videos that I made onto the zune player and upon sync in does encode them to WMV before transfer to the Zune device. As for me being a MS fan. I'm not, I have no bias to anyone other then my pocketbook. I was in the market to upgrade my existing iPod and took a look at the Zune, post launch, retail, with my own money. No one gave me one, no one asked me to review it. And one last clarification, I am not Jean-Luc Picard, just happen to have a name very similar to the actor Patrick Stewart. Thanks and have a nice day!
But, you are forgetting the fact of buying a Zune allows me to rent songs I'd never buy... Like comedy albums, I won't buy a comedy album because I would only listen to it once, but with the monthly fee I can rent them.Think of it as a netflix or blockbuster for music. Download songs you don't want to buy and then the math adds up.In one day I downloaded 300 songs, I can go back and get any available song or full album and find music I like without the remorse of having paid 12 bucks per album or 300 bucks for those songs. As new music comes out, I can get it without having to pay for each. The subscription model may or may not be your best option, but for me, I like the freedom of trying music before I buy it. Heck I might even buy it on iTunes for my iPodsAnd for the record, every song I have purchased in iTunes has been available in the Zune Marketplace via subscription. So I CAN listen to all the songs I purchased in iTunes, without having to pay for them again.
I suspect flag564 is actually an Apple fanboy, out to hurt the Zune by making it's fans look like irrational, emotionally motivated jerks. If he / she were a Microsoft Astroturfer, his / her manager would fire him / her within seconds of seeing the negative reaction people are having to the Zune because of flag564's ranting.
