Go to New York, Washington or something, you can show off whatever you want and be yourself, you'll be safe. I'm not saying that OMG BRAZIL IS THE HELLZ but it shouldn't be like that...
No doubt! China meant the games to be a 'coming out' party to the rest of the world; to show their growth as a country, but all they really did was show us that they are the same old anti-democracy, anti-freedom of religion, anti-free speach dictatorship they have been for the past 60 years. We currently have 8 American protestors, if you can call holding up a Free Tibet sign protesting, in prison for 14 days without being charged. They are planned on being released on Aug 30 and 31st. They set up 14 designated protest zones in response to allegations about human rights abuses, prior to the games. EVERY single application for protest was denied by the Chinese government. Welcome to China, home of the afraid.
I have been to Rio and a wonderful trip during Carnival. I was treated with respect and dignity during the entire trip. While poverty is sure to breed crime rates (see: Chicago/Gary,Indiana), with a little tourist education you can successfully avoid sketchy areas of town. If you want to be safe and need that 'mom tucked you in at night' kind of feeling, than Tokyo is your best bet. They have a lower incidence of violent crime than evey major US metropolitan city. Little research goes along way Mark.
There are many considerations to take into account when they choose these cities. The first step of the IOC selection process is receiving bids from countries wishing to host the games. They get about 10 applicants for each of the games; and 6 of them are always the same: US, Japan, Russia, Australia, Canada, and England have put in bids for the last 12 games straight. The host country must be able to provide the venues for all the games within a 4 year timetable. If a countries GDP doesn't suggest to the IOC that the building of these facilities can be accomplished in 4 years, than they won't win the bid. You saw that China was up to the last minute getting that Bird's Nest done and they have a very large GDP. The games will always be in the world's larger cities which just so happen to be in a handful of locations. This rock we call planet earth only has so many corners...Where do you want the games? Ethiopia? They can't afford to feed their own families let alone build an aquatic center or gymnastics venue. It would be a perfect world to have the olympics in each country, but as we saw in China (see: Human Rights Violations) not every country is ready for it.
