Sure they can just implement XMPP, but that wouldn't mean full interoperability, which they don't want in the first place. AOL and Google are planning to fully integrate, meaning you can use your accounts at either location (use AIM with a GT account and vice versa, ideally).
How did Google f**k up? In the long term, Jabber will win, give it a few more years. IM has so much potential, but only an open protocol can take it mainstream. Everybodies parents are already using email, and a day will come when they have a Jabber account - just that they don't care that it's Jabber.

im a msn and yahoo so i fink that the msn+yahoo will work well i just dont no how to use google and aol and if it was not for MS there would not be any of them so go for it MS good look.

I really hate AIM... but the fact is that ever body uses it. I don't know anyone that doesn't have it.
