arstechnica.com— It seems that the story of IBM'S 500Ghz super-cooled processor suffered from a bit of 'creative' journalism.

Nobody has downplayed the research in any way - this is just clarification as to what exactly was achieved. If anything, I'm more impressed with the results now I know exactly what was managed, rather than what was reported by journalists who can't seperate a 'mobile phone chip' from a transistor.Plus - note my use of the word 'suffered' in the title. I do believe that this sort of reporting does harm the credibility of these developments, and no, of course the researchers had nothing to do with the reports.
It's not splitting hairs, the physical and electrical differences of scale between a single transistor and an integrated circuit are so large it's almost hard to imagine.
Very interesting read. I had actually only heard passing talk of this just recently, so I wasn't really aware of what the deal was. Even the speeds they were able to hit at room temperatures are impressive, which makes me curious as to what applications this could be used in, and weather or not engineers will be able to use the same or similar techniques to either make products more affordable, or even just expand on what we currently have (Yes, we have some pretty amazing wireless devices these days, but at the same time, they have a long way to go)....or both!
Technichally, it could be up to 350-500GHz, this isn't a measure of the actual CPU's clockspeed, but the transistors _inside_ of it, as in, they could travel at speeds of up 350-500GHz.
This is just Ars Techica Misfits, hired by Intel, doing what they get paid to do. Confuse the issues and make IBM somehow look bad! It has been the Jerkwads at Ars sole intent since they graduated from diapers to toddler thinking. This guy like most of their near brainless dweebs at Ars, think they know more than a Corporation that's legacy is encompassed in "BIG BLUE"! The fact that Intel has changed Ars diapers when they've pooped their brainsh*t on the web, only lends itself to the absurdity of this article and that they somehow think that they are remotely qualified to say jacksh*t about it! I say, NOT!
