umm you guys need to get out more or read more or both. this is really nothing new, before there were cars what do you think they used? horses, though people a hundred years ago were a bit smarter. they knew that it was much better to ride (a) horse. there were many horse belt driven machines, like rock crushers and such, and no this was not just farm use.
