engadget.com — It looks like Hulu's trying yet another ill-fated tactic to keep its content restricted to traditional browsers and off things like Boxxee -- TunerFreeMCE's Martin Millmore says Hulu's HTML is now encrypted at the source and then decrypted using Javascript on the client...

Why does Hulu even bother, Boxee will just update to work around the problem. All this does is cause issues with legitimate users with non-mainstream browsers.By the way, I just watched a Daily Show clip on Hulu with the PS3 browser. Seems to still work fine.

simple lesson - anything decrypted client side, can *surprise* be accessed by user. All your doing is adding a thin layer of protection that only keeps out the complete noob users who may happen to look at the source. The truly determined will be able to get at it quicker and cheaper then it took you to encrypt and manage that code.Idiocy at it's finest.

More job for them = more money. Doubt they are annoyed.

It's about people being able to watch Hulu on the TV instead of the computer. The networks don't want Hulu cutting into their traditional market place. They see a difference between watching TV on the computer and watching it on the Plasma/LCD TV. They don't want people replacing their cable connection with a pure Internet one. They lose control and cannot shove as many commercials at you per hour of content.

To say that what they have done is trivially circumventable is an understatement. To even say that what they are doing is "encryption" is being extremely generous. I wrote up a short blog article detailing the exact approach used. You can find the article at <a class="user" href="http://labs.neohapsis.com/2009/04/14/huluclient-side-encryptionseriously/">http://labs.neohapsis.com/2009/04/14/huluclient-si ...</a>
