ap.google.com — President Hugo Chavez on Sunday threatened to cut off oil sales to the United States if Exxon Mobil Corp. wins court judgments to seize billions of dollars in Venezuelan assets. "If you end up freezing Venezuelan assets and it harms us, we're going to harm you. Do you know how? We aren't going to send oil to the US. Take note, Mr. Bush, Mr. Danger"

Are you crazy ? I don't know where to begin so I guess I will skip around a bit here. Any state can say what ever it likes about their motives , Nazi Germany , Russia , but what they say and the truth are not one in the same. You respect The US for its use of power? Do you really know your history? You are right about the United Sates having THE power , but I don't think you know what the USA does with its power. The answer is , what ever it wants and can get their population to accept. The United States government has already tried to take Hugo out. They backed a coupe that took power but eventually was taken back. Don't worry about capital . A state leader can always go to the world bank and get loans on behalf of the people and line their pockets . Then the population can spend over half their GNP every year repaying the fraudulent loans. The Global market isn't a free market system. Its protectionist. America has a small ego?!? It seems that your logic is, cow tail to power. You might want to read some work by Noam Chomsky . Understanding power , failed states, Hegemony or survival , Imperial Ambitions, Profit Over People. just to name a few.

Chavez can't be allowed to steal oil company assets. Let the chips fall where they may.

They are not seizing Venezuelas assets they are seizing PDVSA's assets. PDVSA was a publicly traded company they sold shares of ownership and borrowed in the form of bonds to people all over the world. Chavez claimed ownership of PDVSA. The assets are being frozen so he can not spend the money that belongs to every person around the world that bought into PDVSA or lent them money. This isnt rich fat cats, it's an oil company so it's person with government jobs, union members, retirees, Pension fund, retirement fund, health funds are invested in the market and oil is the backbone of the world market. He can't simply say because it is in Venezuela he can take it. (obviously since the assets have been seized) He has also seriously hurt Venezuela because people are now very cautious about investing money in Venezuela for fear that Chavez will do this again. He has set back Venezuelas economy decades in an effort to make himself a little richer. He is the richest man in Venezuela, what does that tell you?

Has nothing to do with Muslims or terrorism or why the WTC was attacked it simply points out that resource competition is a big factor in world peace. The cut off of oil to Japan did help to push them to the conclusion they must buy time to find and secure replacements and the attack on Pearl was part of that reaction. My point is meant as a cautionary note to Chavez not to underestimate possible triggers this provocation may produce. However I concede it is clear that the US and Japan where on a collision course even if they had not allied with Germany and the oil embargo just hastened that eventuality.
