k-rad.hk — .ts files, .mkv files, mpeg-2, mpeg-4, h.264, layer 4, layer 10... It's all so confusing! This post attempts to clarify all the different file formats, and tells you EXACTLY what software you need to play HDTV content on your PC. They look at both free and commercial software.

Yeah, correct me if I'm wrong but that mkv format sucks. It uses the most CPU and basically. xvid and divx are the fastest for me, and and hr.ac3 rip of your fav tv show looks amazing. h.264 basically needs a Mac because they ported quicktime so s**tty that basic mov and m4v files play like s**t. Just my opinion....

Gom player is pretty damn good. http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Video-Players/Gom-Player.shtmlQuote from CNET;GOM Player is a free multimedia player with popular video and audio codecs built-in. GOM Player supports file formats such as AVI, DAT, MPEG, DivX, XviD, WMV, ASF and more. Users don't have to install codecs separately. GOM Player is capable of playing incomplete or damaged AVI files by skipping the damaged frames. It can also play locked or partially downloaded files. Its other features include drag-and-drop support, HTTP streaming, editable skins, subtitling, overlay mixer, key remapping, enhanced filter rendering, real-time index rebuilding for AVI files and unicode support among others.http://videostreams.blogspot.com/

anyone got a good page like this listing HD solutions for mac? I'd digg it-

Yeah, I guess mpeg2 should work. But can it really keep up with all the features of pure video (mainly ivtc and deinterlacing)? And native mpeg4 transport streams will certainly be a problem speed wise (try Planet Earth).

what does it take as far as hardware requirements to play 1080i smoothly? Does dualcore really make a difference vs overclocked single core? Does the 1080i use both cores? What about graphics card? what is needed?

You may want to reconsider using K-Lite:http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php?title=K-Lite

I recently bought an HDTV to use as my monitor (1080p). So when I started downloading movies in 1080p, my computer couldn't handle them. I still don't know whether this is my hardware or my software. I use VLC and FFDShow, on a 2.8 Ghz P4 w/ 512 MB RAM and an ATI Radeon 9600. Can anyone advise me as to which is my weak point? Some 720p content plays fine, and I've noticed that some 1080p works but not very smooth as well. Thanks.

Thanks a lot. I will try what you've recommended. Can't wait to watch King Kong in 1080p!
