lifehacker.com — The best, Apple-endorsed way to move an iTunes library is to use iTunes 7's built-in backup and restore. However, if you're like me and you've got a 60 gigabyte library and you don't have time to stand around burning a dozen DVD's, the method described here lets you copy the files, with playlists and ratings, directly from one computer to another

I think the point is to maintain your playlists, ratings, etc. Copying the folder directly from one to another doesn't do this, especially when crossing platforms...

For Video VLC is King, but for Audio, I still rather use Winamp - 'blackdawn10' skin, its pretty kickass. Everything fits together perfectly, the equalizer, the player, the playlist.

Let's see... step 1: don't use iTunes because it locks you in and makes you do stupid s**t like this just to enable something you're legally allowed to do ("fair use").

Damn no one even reads the article. Half of these comments don't even cover the exact subject of the article.

Actually, it was WinAmp's and WMP's suckiness that drove me to iTunes. WinAmp is great as a little mp3 player, but it's incredibly slow and buggy when used for managing a large collection of music, at least it was for me in 2004 when I was searching for a new home for my music collection. In 2004/2005, iTunes was literally the only option.

i gave up on winamp when they had to start supporting two different version, because no one liked their new release.

about a year ago when i moved my iTunes library from my Dell PC to my Mac Mini all i did was copy the XML file (which i keep backed up every so often, in cash iTunes decides to crap out on me)and imported that to the iTunes on my MacMini. then just changed the iTunes Library Location in the General section of the ADVANCED tab. and that was all that needed to be done. i never had to go changing up the source path in the XML file at all.

I think foobar is pretty nice for windows, but for Mac iTunes is so dominant that no one else really makes other optioIt’s really amazing to read thisthis article. Thank you so much for your help and for your efforts.I guesss songbird or cog, but iTunes is better. Thanks,Steve<a class="user" href="http://www.eplanetlabs.com">http://www.eplanetlabs.com</a>

IT WORKS! I JUST DID IT. I discovered this method once on my own when switching from windows xp SP2 to SP3. It was a lot easier--I just had to change drive letters. Since then, I've long forgotten how to do it and being a new mac user didn't help either. The only reason I do this is to retain my play counts--this method works great for that purpose! (the note about the method not retaining play counts is wrongthis method has a very small learning curve. if you don't know anything about file paths, that's okay--you'll learn a lot from this process.
