A few days ago, I found an OLD windows XP Pro sp 1a disc lying around. I didn't have the serial number anymore just the disc. So I thought hey why not and installed it into the freespace of the computer's second hard drive. To my suprise, it has never once asked for a serial number. No activation no WGA, nothing. Why is that?I'm thinking about updating to SP2, but I am afraid it will ask for a serial. Any one know?
Three common and safe methods to reset your lost Windows admin password
Forgot Windows xp admin password? Don't worry!Let me show you how to recover it with three available solutions, widespread methods.Hope it can help you!By the way,I just want to say that Windows password is not security, people can use this tool to gain access whichever computer installed Windows 7/vista/xp/2008/2003/2000.If you want to know how to protect your windows admin password, you can find out answer here: http://www.daossoft.com/blog/protect-your-windows-password-by-bios.html
Method 1
Use the built-in administrator account which you can logon without password in safe mode.It was built when you install your system and its password default as blank.Press ctrl+alt+delete twice in the welcome screen and you can see a classical logon dialog box, type administrator and press Enter.Or you can press F8 when you start/restart your computer to select start from safe mode.
Method 2
Use a password reset disk If you have created ever.Of course it must be created for your current password. You can find a prompt when you input a false password in the welcome screen.Clik it and follow the guide.
Method 3
If the two methods above cannot help you,you can find a recovery tool.
As far as I know, there are many password tools on the network, but I have used is "Windows password rescuer professional" ,it is simple and safe that the average person will use it. It can soon reset the password in several minutes.Only four steps can help you reset the lost Windows password:
Step 1: Download Windows Password Rescuer and install it to another computer.
Step 2: Run it and burn it to a bootable CD/DVD or USB flash drive. Before this confirm that you have insert a CD/DVD or USB.
Step 3: BIOS setting:Setup your own computer boot from CD or USB.Press F2 or DELETE when you start/restart your PC to get into the BIOS SETUP list.Use arrow keys to select boot manu, and use +/- key to move the CD/DVD or USB option to the first site. Then inset the CD/DVD or USB you have just created. Press F10 to save and exit.
Step 4: Reset Windows password: Wait for a moment,it will display friendly operate window, and you can reset whichever password on it.More detailed instruction refer to this article: http://www.daossoft.com/documents/how-to-reset-window-2000-xp-vista-win7-password.html
Something else that works that I found out is that if you simply don't log out of Windows or shut down your computer, you won't have to activate it either.I went out and bought a copy of WindowsXP Pro, maybe two years ago. After a DVD burner firmware update Windows suddenly demanded that I reactivate my copy of Windows because my hardware had changed significantly.I don't normally shut down my PC anyways because I've always got something running on it over night. And it wouldn't let me activate Windows because it said my copy had been activated too many times. So I left it running, the 30 days came and went, went for another month, and it never kicked me off or rebooted. It just bugged me every 45 minutes or so to activate Windows.
To log in, you can just boot up in safe mode with command prompt. Then log into your normal account, and type "explorer" into command prompt, and then type "exit". You'll have full safe mode functionality with the taskbar and without everything shutting down soon.
Use the Narrator weblink(windows key + U after saying yes to activate windows from the user logon screen) trick to get yourself a browser and download litestep windows shell. Using IE, go to open file and find c:\windows\explorer.exe and right-click and select open. Don't select the open button on the dialog. Using Firefox go to the download window(if it isn't up still) from the tools menu and try to run the litestep installer. I had to associate explorer.exe with the .EXE mime type because windows lost it's mime types when running in this reduced mode. Now you don't get very much time before windows closes the explorer(ie file manager) windows; so do what you must to get the shell installed. I couldn't get the user logon to bypass anything. So EVERY time you restart the computer you will do the methods outlined below.try to log in. You will get a "you must activate windows before logging in" _> select yes. Now press windows key + U. Click on the microsoft link underlined. It will open a web browser(your default).YOu can close the narrator box now or even while the browser is loading. Do a file open and find the litestep shell exe(litestep.exe) right-click and select open. You now have a functional windows machine or sorts. Keep the activate windows dialog box minimized and never close it until you want to turn the computer off or restart it. I have no clue if you can install hardware or if wireless adapter will work. And I know this thread is old, but XP is still in use. You will have to either reinstall windows using a corporate or LEGAL CD and CD-key or use this method. Now the activation screen says windows is activated and I don't know how to "un activate" it to try a different key. So even calling microsoft and paying money would not be an option.

Confirmed in Vista Enterprise. It's actually even easier as they have a link to microsoft's website right in the activation window. They probably just don't care as you can still access with "reduced functionality"<a class="user" href="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v56/geekguy/vistabypass.png/">http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v56/geekguy/vistabypass.png/</a>

"How to login to an expired Windows" is not a cue to rant about buying software.

Yeah see, all I did was press the "Activate Now" button when I installed Windows. Seemed to work perfect. Haven't had a problem since.
