engadget.com— Well with the June 30th cutoff fast approaching, PC World decided to take a look at your options for procuring an XP license after that date, but unfortunately, the picture isn't too pretty.

I bought my laptop with Vista...what a HUGE Mistake that was! I would do anything to go back and get it with just XP! It's slow, it stalls out all the time, security sucks! Upgrading sucks!
More relevently, Linux Mint has the bits and bobs you cant include in most stuff out of the box (like DVD playback and the like). Otherwise appart from the presence of only one panel and an XP like "start menu" it has all the normal linux learning curves (the biggest being the file system).
Whole governments are ditching windows.....Japan,China, Both Koreas, germany....and then you have departments of government ditching windows.....french police, most EU schools......there's more to the world that the U.S.
You shouldn't "upgrade" at all. You should move to the next operating system when you get a "new" computer. Most new desktops have 2 gigs of RAM standard. And plenty of horsepower to run Vista.
@ dukeochutney : Mac OS X is a full Unix standards compliant O/S. So you are very very wrong. Mac OS X = Unix - and if you believe otherwise, you simply don't know what you are talking about.
May I ask the specs. For a Vista machine, you must have no less than 2GB RAM, and at least a 1.5 GHz Dual-Core processor. I bought my laptop recently and it was reasonably fast but of course, came with useless software that I didn't need. After removing them It was fast. Vista is a great OS once used on the right hardware. Also be patient, Microsoft is coming with SP1, that should fix most problems relating to speed and performance. Remember, Windows XP wasn't good when it came out but Microsoft fixed it.

Moron. I can have an Opteron 175 and it's still running on DDR400. You need to have a brain/fingers filter installed.
