I think you miss the point some what bringing the ipod in as an example! The original ipod was designed as the first mp3 player for mac, as at that time mac peripherals were few and far between, however, as with most of Apple's products they take an ok idea and turn it in to a great idea which is what they did with the ipod and the mac for that matter. It's very difficult to come up with a totally original idea anymore, most 'new' ideas are a combination of two or more existing ideas. This is often done in the technology sector and Apple is a perfect example, 'new' products that are a combination of already existing ideas:Mac (originally inspired by IBM) Mac OS X (inspired by windoze 98)Ipod (inspired by Creative and others)Mighty Mouse (inspired by pc mouse and a laptop track pad) Iphone (inspired by the ipod, current PDA's current mobile phones, etc.)Another great example is the Dyson vacuum cleaner, the industry laughed, as the inventor created the worlds first bagless vacuum cleaner, now it's the most popular vacuum cleaner and the industry has followed suit. This only came after millions were spent and years of determination. How does this work from YouTube's point of view, well, as a designer myself I can safely say that the layout of YouTube is pretty uninspiring even though it is easy to use etc. However, as new technologies develop and profession design is used the user experience increases quite dramatically. To say you could make a Billion from any website is wildly ambitious, however, to create a community based site that dedicates itself to the user and constantly adds improvements and new technologies along the way can't be a bad thing.YouTube, Myspace and even eBay are not perfect by any means, the larger these site become the harder they are to add new technologies too, so realistically there is a chance with the correct planning, good design practice and dedicated builders you could have a competing site, however, using Dyson as an example it can take a lot of time, money and effort but if your determined that you've created something that would benefit users and is better than the competition then it's worth it in my book, otherwise the internet and any other industry for that mater would be very boring.Improving existing ideas is something that has always been done, it's what makes competition in the market place but the true pioneers go above and beyond simply the idea of a competing product, the improve it vastly and believe in the product/service more than they believe in making money. If you want to make the new YouTube because you want to make lots of money you will fail because you will miss all the details that made Youtube great in the first place, it wasn't created to make money, it was created as a great user experience and money was a happy bi product.

Lets not forget about Ning you can make your own video site there too. Granted you don't have full control but it is a hell of a lot easier.http://videos.ning.com/
