p2pnet.net — This paper argues the decentralized nature of Bit Torrent promotes altruism among Bit Torrent users, and that this altruism, not Bit Torrent's tit-for-tat design, is what has caused its success. It concludes that the rise of Bit Torrent meta-search sites will increase free-riders.

Impressive study but leechers suck.

Goes well with the supposed release of "Mac OS X x86" story.

Agreed that leechers suck. There is no excuse.Scotty6969: well done. One of my Gummi Bears season torrents is at a ratio of 25:1 right now. It was at 12:1 before I had to reformat. So, I've shared at nearly a 40:1 ratio with a multi-gig file (and I'm sharing 10 other old TV torrents like that right now :)The past 24 hours:Down/Up: 2.47GB/8.01GBGranted, I'm sharing old TV shows and not warez or current shows, I have a desire to spread the nostalgia, so I keep sharing a while. Shows like Daily Show with Jon Stewart and Family Guy (Guy Family) I share to about 1:1 and then take it off, so that I'm not increasing my suability ;)

My problem with keeping ratio's high is insightbb's poor upload speed. Set to unlimited the highest I can get is around 44kbs but at that point it becomes a drag to do any sort of work on the internet, so it's halved during the day.

I'm a leecher, I don't want to be a leecher. Unfortunately my (Australian) Cable provider allows me a 10GB combined upload/download limit, after which my speed is slowed to 64kbps for the remainder of the month.Until my contract runs out (in 2006), and I can switch to ADSL 2, I stuck as a leecher. Sorry

luke, actually, it is an interesting analysis of a cooperative system and cheating using the prisoner's dilema and population biological theory. As an evolutionary psychologist / zoologist I find this article fascinating. I will probably use it in one of my classes in the fall.
