lifehacker.com — An AOL dialup account has always been notoriously easy to sign up for and hard to cancel. Tech expert Dave Taylor says it took 50 minutes (!) in total to cancel his account after signing up with one of those ubiquitous free CDs for fun.

I use AOL whenever I move so, when it comes time for me to cancel, I always dread it. I got one girl that was VERY persistent, and I didnt feel like arguing(that is rare), So I let her go through her whole deal about giving me a free month, and when she came to the part where I could Cancel at any point before that month was up. I POUNCED, I asked AT ANY POINT between RIGHT NOW and one month from now I can cancel my subscription?"Yes, at ANY point"OK, then how about NOW.MAN was she PISSED.

I ended up with 2 AOL accounts (Gratis network sign-up obligations, I think). The first one I told him that I was going to college and no longer needed their service. He kept talking about great games and research opportunities that AOL could offer. I kept refusing, he kept pitching. Finally, he gave up and tried to make me feel guilty. For the second account I called back, told them my mother was dying of cancer, and that I was pawning my computer to cover medical expenses. Took 3 minutes.

TO get them to cancel my account I told the guy I was recording him and "I DO NOT WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH AOL OR YOUR CHEAP SIDEKICK NETSCAPE!". I only had to repeat myself 15 times but I think I got the message through. I have it as a wav file incase anyone wants to hear it.put it on http://www.rapidshare.de :)

I just cancelled my account and it only took 5 minutes! I just said I had DSL, I never used AOL, and for some reason they believed me when I said my router had spam blocker and phishing protection :)

Visit the following link and change your account to a free account... You still get all of the benefits of your AOL account, minus the amazingly helpful technical support (note sarcasm) and dialup access.https://bill.aol.com/changePlan/changePlan.adpFrom that link, you'll need to login to your account and provide the answer to your AOL security question. Once you've entered your information, you can downgrade to a free account without talking to anyone from AOL.
