Damn fine idea, IMHO. One should never pledge allegiance to symbols -- they're too easily perverted. Now pledging allegiance to what the symnbols stands for, OTOH, is about as patriotic as you can get. We require our soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, civil servants, & elected officials to do it We might have a few more actual patriots & a few fewer charlatans & hucksters if we replaced the pledge to the symbol with the pledge to the genuine article instead.
