This is very similar to how 300 was created. The best example being the scene where the Persians are pushed off the cliffs. That was like twelve guys, pushed off a rock onto mats in front of a blue screen, and repeated like twenty times. Then put together in the end with a background. Also there was one fake rock used for about thirty different scenes in that movie, just shot at different angles. Pretty sweet stuff.
