Once installed, the OS 3.0 beta can't be downgraded back to 2.21. It is beta software and there are going to be plenty of issues. Even bricking the phone during the upgrade is possible. It's not worth becoming a developer to put this unstable OS on your phone. Wait a few months for the real thing. My guess is that heavy bandwidth use through tethering is a great way to get yourself noticed by AT&T.
What? Someone ?? let's just call him Joe for now ?? found a torrent on TPB for the iPhone 3.0 beta yesterday. Joe opened iTunes and updated his 2.2.1 iPhone with the beta firmware, and has been running it smoothly since then. He also synced with iTunes afterwards.
There's a torrent listed as 7a341 GM (Gold Master) - It definitely works on non-dev phones. I have it on my 3g right now - no tethering or MMS due to AT&T, but other than that, 100% functional. It syncs with iTunes just fine.

Buried because of gizmodo.com. Those kids are not worthy writing about anything Apple or iPhone. I think Apple should sue gizmodo.com out of business.

LOL that's what I thought to myself. "Well, do they want me to learn it or not !?" Anyway, it's lame, I buried it... cuz I'm with Rogers.

Waving goodbye to my jailbroken apps is the dealbreaker for me. I don't care if it's fully stable, no backgrounder and I'm avoiding it.

Actually, no hacking of your iPhone at the direction of strangers is required (or wise). Here the feature is described. http://www.apple.com/iphone/iphone-3gs/tethering.h ... Look at documentation that came with your 3G iPhone or download the PDF of it from support.apple.com for more info.

Do you routinely dig up articles from years ago and comment on them, just to give yourself a sense of self-worth?
