Reducing color palette to fewer colors than the number of unique colors in the original image IS lossy. It just doesn't look nearly so bad as other lossy compression types like mpeg (jpeg) unless it's really overdone. So really, yes. It is lossy.

Interesting.I tried it on several images... most of the images saved by quick-and-dirty (like ImageMagick's import tool) get pretty good compression. Near 50%.But for images saved in GIMP, I really don't get anything. 4kb shaved at the most. Usually much much less. (I may do another pass later with the -brute option, but it's not that big of an improvement.)Still, it's lossless and every byte saved is one less byte to transfer which is one less byte per visitor on bandwidth, so... why not?

I like! I like! For the lazy, I created a zip executable to extract the newest version of pngcrush, it's readme, and the instructions (tweaked and fixed) to install it to the context menu:<a class="user" href="http://www15.rapidupload.com/d.php?file=dl&filepath=7644">http://www15.rapidupload.com/d.php?file=dl&filepath=7644</a>Just run the exe, then go to folder options and add the following command to your png's:"C:Program Filespngcrushpngcrush.exe" -e 2.png "%1"

It is not a unique string. It could only be a unique string if there were less or equal combinations of original content as there are possible hashes. There is a limit to the total number of possible hashes(the length of the hash), but there is no limit to the total possible original contents, which means two completely different blocks of text could create the same MD5 hash.

Its funny the .PNG Photo on the article is only 174 x 118 and still coming in at a high 11.37KB!, So much for that piece of s**t...

Personally, I use PNG Gauntlet ( <a class="user" href="http://brh.numbera.com/software/pnggauntlet/">http://brh.numbera.com/software/pnggauntlet/</a> ) which is basically PNGout with a GUI.

If you have Fink, you can use it to easily install both optipng and pngcrush. Personally, I like to run optipng and then run advpng (which further optimizes the LZ compression) on the result. I don't think there's an OS X binary for advpng (part of AdvanceCOMP), but it's a really fast compile. More info on what's actually going on in the wikipedia link carl67ip posted above.

PNGCrush compresses much more than Ping though, and Ping also doesn't get rid of the png gamma (<a class="user" href="http://user.fundy.net/morris/photoshop03.shtml)">http://user.fundy.net/morris/photoshop03.shtml)</a> which is the main reason I use pngcrush anywayIt would be great if someone could make an automator action for this.

None of these come anywhere remotely close to another solution: embed the PNG in an SWF. This also circumvents the transparency problem in IE. A PNG in an SWF that's loaded via SWFObject ( <a class="user" href="http://blog.deconcept.com/swfobject/">http://blog.deconcept.com/swfobject/</a> ) still seems like the winner.
