The problem here is if you have a bad key installed from the very beginning, and you try and go online with it, windows update detects this bad key and somehow lets windows xp that it is forever bad, even if you change the cd key. I've yet to see or find the method windows xp uses to save this information. I could be mistaken about the forever thing. I've heard people say after a few hours then they try and change the key to a "good" key it works, as the "this is not a geniune copy of windows" blacklists your computer for x amount of hours, and any key changes in this time frame fail no matter good or bad key.Secondly, Windows XP saves every cd key attempt in the registry if the key meets key standards (windows accepts the key). So everytime you change your cd key, that key is saved in the registry. and it's a protected part of the registry. however some bootable dos program could probably take care of it or some registry program that can modify any registry field.

I had the same problem, if you can access the security tab for the folder, there is an option to 'Take Ownership' of the folder, make sure you check the box marked 'Apply to child folders' or words similar.HTH

I really appreciate you letting us know about this tool. I've changed keys before 'the old way', and just came across a Dell XPP system that would NOT allow keychange - nor would putting the zotz on the registry WPA help, nor RockXP (which I think fails for the same reason Magic Jellybean fails to do a keychange). This official tool Works. Period.Note: Grisoft's AVG apparently hooks into the pk or its hash - so you'd have to reinstall after a keychange. Thanks!
