tech.msn.com — Netbooks are tiny ? usually between half and two-thirds the size of a garden-variety laptop ? and they typically weigh around 2.5 lbs. With their cool, slim designs, they outclass some ultraportables. And best of all, these diminutive laptops start at around $200 (in some cases $100, when purchased as part of a mobile broadband promotional deal).

I bought an aspire one with linpus because I wanted the fast boot time and didn't want Windows. Unfortunately that was a bad move.I fired it up and was pleased enough with the boot time and OS, until I realised that the fan was running at full speed constantly - turns out this is a common problem and after plenty of searching found a script that required some command line meddling, permission changing and general f**king about. That sorted I had a look at the installed software. It has Firefox 2.0 - you would think it would be easy to update it - nope. Its a pain. Same with Open Office - it comes with version 2 - again its a total nightmare to update to 3. The mail program is crap. The Calendar is useless. There have been no updates to the OS since beginning of the year.So I'm sad to have to say that if I bought another, I'd get a Windows one - linpus lite is total s**t. I'd rather have spent half an hour securing that than days f**king with a crippled linux install.

That laptop pretty much eliminates any non-form factor reason to buy a Netbook.

Most of them can be upgraded to 2GB - some are more of a dissasembly pain than others..For example the Dell mini 9 is super easy.

Not sure why this was dugg down, its a legit issue. If you have a SSD you're best off doing all your building on a ramdrive (probably not a good idea with only 512mb), or better yet - use distcc and send everything to your compiler on your desktop/workstation/server.
