salon.com — The real media failing was not in any one area; it was across the board. Lies and distortions went unchallenged, or were actively promoted. Fundamental and problematic assumptions about terrorism and the "war on terror" were rarely debated or even discussed. Vital historical context was almost never provided. Good reporting was also absent.

If reporters were to ask one question - and they should have asked this relentlessly - it should be "Are we in Iraq to protect our oil interests?" If there were a reporter who had the nerve to ask this question over and over again until the American public began asking this, we'd get to the bottom of why we're at war. The real reason why the media has failed is because they know that we're at war for oil but the subject is never brought up. Halliburton's head office is moving to Dubai, and not one mainstream media outlet reported this. It's absolutely spineless. the U.S. has been selling nuclear technology to Iran since the 80's, and not one reporter dares ask Dick Cheney about it - even though he's on record as being involved in the selling. What will it take to stand up to this administration and ask tough questions?

So for this one it took 21 hours (approximately) for the good old moronic neo-con fascist argument to come up. Congratulations stepnw1f! You are the winner for that prize! At that point all those arguing in favor of schlurp's line of thinking lost the argument. The fact of the matter is stepnw1f you don't actually know what a fascist is, nor what a neo-con is. If you did, you wouldn't make such ludicrously unsupportable statements.

@ereinei1. NPR says "Democratically controlled Congress" all the time2. The only place I even heard about the Dianne Feinstein controversy was on NPR3. Global Warming stories pretty much only air on TOTN Science Friday. You may hear them on other shows, but they are probably shows that are selected by your local public radio affiliate.I am a moderate who actually voted for Bush once (2000), and I feel that Talk of the Nation is the mont un-biased news source this country has.

Hey, we are still here aren't we? What would we know if the media reported nothing? The people have failed the people more than the media have failed the people. I criticize the heck out of media when I see something off about it, but there are still a lot of honest reporters out there who do try to do the right thing.

The mass media isn't in to reporting news anymore, they are in the business of manipulating public opinion and elections. If they had talked up the Iraq War and GWB instead of down, the poll numbers for both would be reversed.
