economist.com — The eight-hours mantra has no more scientific basis than the tooth fairy, says Neil Stanley, head of sleep research at the Human Psychopharmacology Research Unit at the University of Surrey in Britain. He believes that everyone has their own individual “sleep need” which can be anywhere between three and 11 hours.

Fascinating stuff. Thatcher famously needed about 3 a night, and some other famous uber-ambitious folk had likewise modest sleep patterns. Early morning routines are such death for some of us -- we can barely think a coherent thought. But damn, I want that drug they mention in the opening!!

Would it have to be at the same time so that those in the US got their siesta at 7.30, Spain at 12.00 and Australia 10.30 at night?

Uh... do you live in the Amazon? NO! Those rain forests contain some serious s**t that helped Magic Johnson rid himself of the HIV.

It's very true. It's the two-pack a day cigarette smokers that give the casual pipe/cigar smoker a bad name. Truth is that most things done in caution and moderation are not that bad for you.

the extra hour of sleep definately does help. in the summer and on saturdays i take art courses at local art school and its SOO much easier to get up for those. why? because people are supposed to get up AFTER the sun is up or rising. also, the melatonin (hormone that causes you to sleep) in teenagers rises and lowers later than in adults and kids. Were supposed to be going to sleep after 10 and getting up at around 8-ish (isnt it odd that this is the exact time i get up for my art courses and I have no trouble at all doing that while getting up for normal school is a pain in the ass)
