dailytech.com— Baseline Vista offerings will require 512MB of DRAM just to install, with a 1GB recommendation -- but there is more to this story.

My cynical nature says that M$ padded the system requirements make the requirement of buying DRM oriented equipment required for the rest of the OS palatable.
"It doesn't need any fancy hardware, doesn't need massive amounts of RAM. I'm not sure why people who have never run it are getting all whipped up about it"Yeah really, I had the beta on my P4 1.8 w/ 512 mem with a Radeon 9600 and it ran fine even with a ton of a eye candy enabled. You can also shut off all the effects so it looks like XP anyway.
you guys are a bunch of f**king losers. I swear this site has some of the most uneducated responses. I mean, some guys are talking about conspiracy's!? Get a f**king life and just play on your computers and/or work on them. If you can get the job done, that's what only matters. Get your feet back on earth. Jesus, I'm sick of this s**t.Windows Vista is going to Launch. There are also Mac's you can try if windows isn't your cup of tea.God damnit! I need anger management from you punks!
-Who is running less than 512MB on a "modern" machine? You call yourselves power users? A gig of RAM is like $80, less if you shop. Besides, why upgrade, when you'll need a new video card to handle DX10 or D3D10 or whatever they're calling it today.-many, many people outside US/EU. i own small web company, we even wrote our own CMS, but when i go to install it, it's either "pirated" XP or 98. And you wouldnt believe how many 98 systems are around here. Yes, that might not be problem for US/EU market, but outside of it, i dont see anyone upgrading.what does basic secretary need?.. word processor and sometime spreadsheet program...does it have to be latest? with DX9 graphics?..... not really....simple as that..... most of small/medium business do NOT have any need to upgrade to Vista, they are running 98... heck, i had to deal with DOS programs sometimes....(real life experience) - i came to explain how our CMS works and got into hours of talk about computers and stuff.... it was small accounting company that bought our CMS.... they are running _ALL_ their accounting programs in DOS on win98 machines.....do you see THEM upgrading to Vista?yes, they have licenced software, but they simply do NOT need more then they have for their work.would you (if you were owner of small company on tight budget) buy both new high comps and new OS that would do _SAME_ things as what you already have?let's make it even more simple : does accounting company need Aero Glass to take care of their customers?
@ zbeast i dont want do soud as ass, but do you even understand that your solution is more then MONTHLY salary in some countries?as i said, it is easy to debate this from US/EU point of view. just bloody google how many people in the world make less then $68 per month.....other then that i agree with you. i am just pointing that moving to Vista outside US/EU is not that simple.there is one simple fact that many in US/EU tend to neglect. more you move to the east from EU, there is more chance that govermant wont give a sh*t about copyright. they have other problems to think about and computers there arent Vista ready.... think India, China, Russia, Eastern Europe, Middle East, Africa... people there are happy if they can run DOS apps on Pentium2 machines....yes, there will be piracy, but can you blame those that will pirate it?after _YEARS_ of hype about Vista, they want to try it, even on POS machines they have...whole wolrd != US/EU
Good points, and I guess I was limiting my comments to US/EU users. What I do know is that when mom wants a new PC, she's going to call Gateway or Dell and get Vista preloaded, with enough RAM (wait a year and a gig of RAM will be mainstay on new systems) and video prowess to run it pretty well, and it'll probably run her $500 or less. This is what MS counts on, not upgrades. And no, I wouldn't necessarily upgrade in a business climate to get essentially the same functionality. Security-wise though, the IT department may have a valid argument that the security benefits outweight the costs of upgrading. It would need to be decided based on each company's unique situation. The benefits of a new OS aren't always about eye candy and gaming. But I see your point.
Sorry dude I should have explained more, We entered the Microsoft Imagine Cup. The final was held at thier Reading Campus. As part of the day, they gave us workshops of the new Office and Visual Studio and Vista. And they also did give us Vista beta 32bit version and 64. I did forget to mention though that it is only a two month beta. Keep it real dudes :o)
