The issue isnt as simple as running unknown attachments or clicking popups, there are multiple vectors for a worm or virus to embed itself that are often overlooked by those who consider themselves "above" getting infected. The biggest problem these days is infected software, keygens etc. spread by wide scale piracy and public torrents.I'm with you in that I find most AV software overly intrusive, bloated and annoying but it's wise to have a copy of Avira or something lightweight like that handy and just use it once a month or so, it doesn't take long and isn't on the same level of bloat as software from the likes of Norton etc.Gone are the days of those simple infection routes that exclusively prey on clueless users, hotgirlwithhugeboobs.jpg.vbs isn't what you should worry about.

exactly...1x1 iframes injected into popular websites are becoming very popular. Plus Conficker also spreads via thumbdrives.

large amounts of outgoing UDP traffic is Conficker beaconing home letting the botmasters know it's alive and well on your system....just an FYI
