nytimes.com— Why are Twinkies and sodas cheaper than fruits and vegetables? Commodity farmers get checks based on how many bushels they can grow. The result is a food system awash in added sugars and added fats.

dweeb, i agree with you to some extent. Poor policies make it the more harder to make better decisions. Yes LIFE IS UNFAIR, you are poor and fat. But you possibly can't beat this digg i found, there are illegal diseases!!! Look it up in the upcoming, life is soooooooooo strange
It also has to do with education... Just because you give someone the means to purchase real foods, does not mean that they can or will make the appropriate decision when they are at the store, or even tougher, on the go! Unless people value their health, they will not understand the ramifications of gorging on some preprocessed crap that is destroying their body from the inside out...
oh, and two more things:1) what's more expensive, paying a little more now to eat better food, or paying for astronomical medical bills later because you didn't eat well?2) why is so much emphasis placed on "snacking"? are snacks a necessity? whatever happened to meals?
Uh....I wouldn't compare them strictly by weight. An actual pound of twinkies is probably close to or more than the price of a pound of tomatoes. What we're talking about here is that for $1, you can get a pound of tomatoes (usually about 2 bigguns, or 4-5 midsize) getting approximately 250 calories from them. A dollar buys about 1/2 pound of twinkies, hitting in the 1000 calorie range. If it weren't for the fact the Twinkies were made from High Fructose Corn Syrup, they would satisfy hunger much more effectively than the tomatoes.
ok...well lets see...I get free internet from the library(thank God! for libraries, so I can read and learn on my own accord, the one good thing in my life) but what I can afford via food is rice, Ramon noodles, ravioli and MacNchees...I can hardly afford milk, and butter and eggs(but breads cheap!) because I can't afford more than 50$ a month on groceries...I can hardly afford my rent and I'm increasingly going more and more in debt, can't get the multiple jobs I need, and the one I do work at doesn't pay me overtime.Excuse me for being fat and poor and thinking the two are related. I would love to be able to go to a gym, or eat healthy food but I CAN'T AFFORD THAT!! I can't afford 12$ a day on food! Are you crazy!!!?? that's a LOT of money!!!you guys are a bunch of ignorant spoiled brats who don't know s**t what it's like to struggle. You blame people for not having a body like you, people who mostly likely can't afford the resources you have and also have to deal with more stress everyday. stress that you didn't have to deal with only because of PRIVILAGE. Don't give me the s**t that you worked hard for your job or your degree that you studied a little bit to everynight while you had a cafeteria and a dorm room and everything...you were given what you have, you didn't "work" to get what you got, you only fulfilled the requirements that comes with your privilage. I got better grades in high school then kids who got to go to college and become engineers and such. I can't go to college because I just cant' afford it, period. So don't demean myself and my peers for our intelligence or our "stamina"(aka saying we're lazy). You obviously don't give a s**t to really understand why someone is the way they are and be tolerable of people because since we live in the political age people are starving for SOMEONE to make fun of, for SOMEONE to treat like s**t, for SOMEONE that anyone at any time can talk s**t to and demean them but no one will do ANYTHING about it, because it's "ok" to treat fat people like they are who's to blame in our society and they caused societies problems.oh, and it's a wonder that people who's lives are s**t would want to have someone give them the love that no one else will AKA have kids....Everyone does it, foreign countries hate fat americans for taking all the resources, thin americans hate fat americans for being fat...but honestly fat people are the result of our society, the consequences of the actions that people with power took trickled down to the poor folk and now we're to blame for our situation. And you know what? I think it was genius of them: they gave us s**t food and made us fat, and gnow they makin us feel more and more like s**t so we'll pay them to give us the food we should have gotten to begin with(and less food) so we wont' be fat. It's like they made the market more efficient so we could afford more food per dollar just so we would eventually want to pay them to give us less food per dollar-food not stock full of fat and calories(and all sorts of chemical s**t)....it'd be nice to be able to buy meat from a butcher-but I just can't afford a freezer.and it'd be nice to be able to afford organic food, but have you seen the prices on that stuff?I challenge you to look through the grocery store and but a month worth of food for 50$ and compare it to a month of food for like 100$ then 200$ then 300$see who gets to eat the healthiest food..............You know, I have to worry about having a place to sleep at night first. It would be nice if I didn't have to deal with everyone treating me like s**t all day long as well.
