Saw this on the news the other night. The news crew went to several professional locksmiths who showed that making and using bump keys is nowhere as easy as it seems in this video.
the real danger with bump keys is that when used properly they do not leave any noticeable evidence of a break in, and the victims get screwed by their insurance company when trying to recover stolen property
Now everyone on digg knows how to pick a lock the easiest way possible thanks to this guy, or make everyone who watches this to re-evaluate there own home locks.
this technique is way easier than lock picking. I use this technique on service calls for lockouts and works well. But only lazy people who dont wanna work will use this to break into other people's home. BUT! key bumping will not work on locks that have side bars.
How about instead of putting this information on the internet for idiots to use to break into people's houses, just tell people to make a copy of their house key and put it someplace inconspicuous... hmmm duh.
All the houses where I live have a plastic housing on the side which is clearly marked by the telephone company. With a simple flathead screwdriver one can open it up and inside you can find a phone jack. Yes, a phone jack. Plug in your phone right there. Even without that one could use one of those telephones with alligator clips that you can find at Home Depot. Clip right onto the exposed metal inside the box.Leave the phone off the hook and how is your alarm system going to make a call? Maybe with a new system with cell technology you'd be okay, but realistically, how many people have that?

why make a bump key when you can buy it on sites like http://www.bumpmylock.com

I bought a 21 piece set from www.universalbumpkeys.com and got into all the locks in my house apart from the patio.
