addisonrd.com — With shared hosting plans running so cheap, it makes sense to use them as remote backup even if you aren't hosting a website. This tutorial shows how to build an automated rsync between your mac and a cheap dreamhost account. It's written for the non-geek.

I've been using Transmit to backup to DH for a few weeks now - as suggested by http://weblog.strongspace.com/tips-and-tricks/automated-backups-with-transmit. I have it set to only upload files that have changed. Only downside is that the Transmit window comes up so I have to minimize it that that isn't a big drawback. Oh and using Transmit means not having to mess with the Terminal.

It would be cool if you could tell rsync to encrypt files on the fly so that no plain text data leaves your computer. But that would break the "mirroring" idea behind rsync. Ah well.

If anyone wants $50 off of a year of hosting at Dreamhost, you can use the promo code "LIFEHACKER" when you check out. (you have to pre-pay for a year for this to work).
