There are so many slicker ways to go than this. Vista Media Center being one, which has the advantage of also offering DVR functionality, TV viewing (with appropriate hardware of course), nice guide data, the ability to stream Netflix On-Demand, music, movies, pictures, a plugin framework for other apps, and dirt cheap ($75-99) low power fanless media extender so you don't need a 150 watt PC by your television running in addition to the server.
iConrad: Does this mediatomb stream to xbox360? I looked a few months back for such an app for linux but came out empty handed... I'm sick of having to copy my shows to a thumb drive...
Although you do have some valid points, I don't understand why you are discussing this in a thread about installing media center software on a Linux box. In other words, this has nothing to do with Windows or recommending you "infect" it with Linux, tard.
If I had some time I could put a howto together. At the moment I'm way overstretched, but it's not terribly difficult as you can scrounge the various instructions together if you're not overly familiar. ZFS is getting to be quite nice on FBSD, especially in that FreeBSD has much better hardware support than OpenSolaris.

Old, gnump3 is old. Better to have a look around at what some of the other guys here are suggesting: Jinzora, MediaTomb et. al.
