crunchgear.com — There?s a conspiracy theory that Steve Jobs wants you to buy a new iPod every 12 months. That may or may not be the case, but if your iPod is hosed, it doesn?t necessarily mean it?s time to put it out to pasture.

As cliche as it sounds, I had to do that with my old TV.

Simple fix, don't buy the craptastic iPod. Or simply install rockbox, and avoid being forced to use the terror that is iTunes.

When i get the sad face, i smack my iPod on my palm, and shake it a lot, and it usually gets back to working.

Ipods would be more useful, if they had at least a little $2 piezo electric speaker in them. Loud enough that you could carry it in your pocket, and hear your music as you walked around, road a bike, or set it on a table in a room, or on the seat of your car. I grew up on AM radio... I don't really need psycho super high quality sound... I just need to be able to hear it. Good enough to listen to audiobooks and podcasts. Apple, get a clue. Even the cheapest of old pocket radios came with a built in speaker.

I tried doing the paper thing that it says, and it actually fixed my 4th gen ipod that has been broken for over a year now... The battery's kind of s**tty at this point, but hey, at least it works.

Ha! I fixed my mom's U2 edition iPod by whacking it once or twice, then setting it on the charger. Originally I thought it was still broken, but I just went to check on it, and it was working fine.

OK, Today I was cleaning out my drawner and I found my old iPod 1g nano, it wont boot so I thought lets google it. I found thise site and I kinda laughed about hitting the iPod. I thought what a stupid asses XD, but i decided to give it a try and it worked!!hahaha i laughed so hard.this is what you have to do- pickup your ipod nano 1g- in your left hand- pull your right hand up- and hit him as hard as you can- hold the centre button- the screen will act very strange-w8 and charge the battery for about 30 mins- boot your ipod again by holding the centre button- finished XD

Do NOT pass up this solution! Thanks for the actual 'procedure' that you detailed. I had tried it a few times, but apparently just hadn't been whacking it quite hard enough.

It ended up only being a temporary solution. It eventually wouldn't work for me again and didn't for a long time. Finally a couple months ago I opened my iPod up disconnected and reconnected the hard drive, and put it all together, and it has been working great since. It's probably safer than whacking it, too, lol. It's hard to get the iPod open the first time, though. I was afraid of breaking it, and my last guitar pick got all chewed up from doing it.
