Or he can realize that most of the people who laughed at him are idiots for not knowing that 170# lean on a 5'7" is very good if he's at that weight w/o much bodyfat. Don't speak on subjects that you know so little about otherwise you look like an idiot.Pro cyclists that are 5'7" usually weigh about 160-170#. So, please, just shut up.

Drinking alcohol stops all protein synthesis until the alcohol is removed from your system. So if you want to build decent muscle then don't drink every day. Also, alcohol increases your estrogen levels.

I agree that the article was not well written and does not have the unexperienced lifter in mind, but I don't think that automatically makes the tips worthless; as someone who does bodybuilding for 'fun' I can see the reasoning behind certain tips/comments that novices miss. It's silly for people who aren't at the advanced level to use those techniques which are designed for people who are at or near the training level where Arnie was. Weightlifting at that level is extremely difficult to see any additional growth when you reach the limit your frame can hold. Most people that aren't at that level and should focus on the essentials/basics.When trying to reach full development of a muscle group, even the smallest changes which are overlooked can make a big difference in growth. Obviously, safety is a priority so caution should be used when changing stances/grip widths, etc. This 'technique' is especially true for the core muscles, and since u used to be a personal trainer I'm sure when your clients asked you how to get 'rock hard abs' you didn't tell them to only do crunches in one way. Most people in the gym think "I'm not experiencing as much growth anymore... that means add more weight!" which is not always the best solution. This can be potentially dangerous because this usually means extra stress on tendons and joints, which is never a good thing. I agree with your comment regarding the "stronger u are = stronger u look." That statement is definitely untrue. Powerlifters hardly look like bodybuilders but they easily can lift more than 3x as much weight on similar exercises. I also agree with the free weights comment to a certain extent. The best thing (and also potentially the most dangerous) about free weights is that you can do exercises that work better for your body's proportions and no machine can provide infinite ranges of motion. I also strongly believe that people that are completely new to weightlifting should begin with machines (and for some strange reason other "experienced" lifters on here seem to disagree with me) but an intro to free weights a few weeks after and ultimately a workout routine with a mix of the two is best. I was saying that oversimplification can lead to false conclusions, and this definitely applies to bodybuilding. It takes a more than just lifting weights up and down if you want to make the most of your time in the gym.

If one wants to use free weights eventually, why not to start with free weights right away? Start with empty bar and add weight every workout. You'll progress fast and learn proper form along the way.Otherwise one would get stronger doing isolated exercises, but when he'll eventually switch to free weights, he'll find out that he has to start all over because of muscle imbalances or not using a proper form. I was doing leg presses with almost 700 lbs, but when I've switched to squats I had to drop to 135 lbs because my back was weak. Talking about reality check. The second reason to use compound free weight exercises is that it saves time. To substitute squats one will have to do leg extensions, leg curls, glute machine, calf exercises, back extensions, ab exercises. No wonder after I'm done with my squats and dead lifts I'm totally worn out.
