catb.org — An extensive definitive guide to learning to be a hacker written by the editor of the Jargon File and author of a few other well-known documents of similar nature. Very comprehensive document that makes for an interesting read whether you want to be a hacker or just want to know more about the lifestyle. Very nice resource.

Open Source is your greatest friend. Learn the langauges and read some open source. Find out why things work the way they do- finding insecurities, tweaks, improvements etc. should then come naturally. There is no quick and easy to learn how to hack, but that doesn't mean its a damn chore to learn. Find open source projects of your intrest and start there! If hacking programs isn't your thing, and you'd rather hack someones computer etc. then fine - learn how (if not to know how to protect yourself). Know that path will rarely get you any respect in the hacker-community (I'm sure you could probably impress your mom though - she thinks your cool).

I'm with you on this. Reading an article on being seen as a desired stereotype (hacker, goth, "super cool", whatever) is cheating yourself on individuality. And the very "hacker mindset" is all about individuality and doing your own thing.Might be a good article for highschool kids which are insecure about their identity.

This is out of date nonsense. The date is 2001 is taken directly from the hackers handbook.
