arstechnica.com — Yesterday, we reported on the announcement of the SET filesharing system. SET claims to accelerate a typical P2P download by anywhere from 30-70 percent by increasing the potential sources of files being downloaded. It works this magic by identifying files that were similar to the one being downloaded, and finding identical pieces

Looks very promising. Would love to see major p2p clients support this soon.

And who supplies all the extra processing power for all the chunks to get their own hash codes? Does it come magically from the internet, or does my processor have to work harder? Anyhow, any new ideas for file sharing are always welcome. (Did I say "f**k da man"?)Sounds like a good concept, but not quite as intriguing as the OFF (Owner Free File) system. I wonder if that one ever got their servers up and running? <a class="user" href="http://offsystem.sourceforge.net/info.php">http://offsystem.sourceforge.net/info.php</a><a class="user" href="http://thebighack.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=622&mode=nested&order=0&thold=0">http://thebighack.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=622&mode=nested&order=0&thold=0</a>

splitting large files in not necessary in usenet. its done so that parity data can be used to reconstruct an archive if one of the peices is missing.

technically it is not necessary to split the archive into pieces to upload it to usenet. one could for example upload an entire 700mb iso as one file. however if you want to have any kind of reasonable expectation that people will be able to download it and use it, you are better off splitting the archive and posting parity data as well.

Easier: Same song, different tag data... it knows and gets the tag from the 2 people that have it and gets the song from the 50 total people that changed the filename or tag data, etc...
