science.howstuffworks.com — The basic idea behind body armor hasn't changed very much in the past few thousand years. First, armor stops weapons or projectiles from reaching a person's body. Second, it diffuses the weapon's energy so that the final impact causes less damage.

The magnetic version seems like its totally not worth it compared to the STF, in the comparison list the STF had all pros, and the magnetic had all cons, and it has to be electrically activated? like someone has time to do that, id go with the STF seems much easier, safer, and lighter and overall much better

You do realize that the troops already have body armor? In fact they have already improved on the existing stuff with side plates as well as shoulder pads. This new stuff is still in the works so right now they need to keep testing until it is feasible to implement in the field. Also how do I know bout the current armor is simple I am a contractor in Iraq and we get the IBA vest issued to us.

@TercDragon Skin are overlapping disk. <a class="user" href="http://rpginn.com/xgalleryx/main.php?g2_itemId=13214">http://rpginn.com/xgalleryx/main.php?g2_itemId=13214</a><a class="user" href="http://rpginn.com/xgalleryx/main.php?g2_itemId=13216">http://rpginn.com/xgalleryx/main.php?g2_itemId=13216</a>The company did a very good job at pissing off the military. It also make false calms that it will stop an .50 BMG round. The company wanted special treatments and complain to congress instead of going through the proper channels. The military wasted a lot of money and time defending itself against the company. Dragon Skin is heavier then the current IBA and MTV. However it protect more area then IBA, MTV I don't know. The armor they gave to the Army for testing could not stop a 7.62 x 54R AP threat. The ESAPI (Enhanced Small Arms Protective Insert) at that time was used by our troops and could stop an 7.62 x 54R AP. In the testing it was found that the disks shifted meaning it wasn't durable enough to withstand combat abuse. My understanding now is that the new Dragon Skin will defeat a 7.62 x 54R AP and have solved the shifting disk problem. I do not know if the military will ever spend the time or money to even give Dragon Skin another try at procurement. If I were in charge I wouldn't.

this armor reminds me of the old movie I think it was "The Spice" where they had these protector shields where a high impact weapon couldn't penetrate, but a low impact weapon like a knife thrust would kill you..I saw the DragonsSkin body armor video (thanks)... and I must admit.. its quite impressive...

jdun,Did you read my comment at all?I was try to say that I think a liquid based armor would be more durable than scales. This (in my mind) would mean that instead of cracking or shifting, liquid would never sustain any permanent damage. Although it's sad so much money was wasted an all... it has nothing to do with my comment
