I think LinkedIn's a good idea. It is not the type of thing that will take over Facebook, but not the kind that will be taken over either. It stands on it's own, will never be extroadinarily big, but it does it's purpose, which is for professionals to post their resumes and have contacts, and look for jobs.

You can unsubscribe from their ad emails, but I'm not 100% sure that will stop random users sending you an email asking you to join.
